Make Writing Your Job: Privacy Notice

Make Writing Your Job is published on Substack. Substack’s own Privacy Policy, available at substack.com/privacy, governs how Substack operates the newsletter platform, including basic delivery of posts and emails to subscribers. This notice describes two additional practices specific to Make Writing Your Job that go beyond what Substack’s platform-level policy covers: (1) how we maintain a backup of our subscriber list, and (2) how we handle information submitted by writers who apply to featured jobs posted on Make Writing Your Job.
1. Subscriber List Backup
We periodically back up our subscriber list (names and email addresses) outside of Substack. We do this so that, if we ever move Make Writing Your Job to a different publishing platform, we can invite our existing subscribers to follow us there. We will never automatically re-enroll anyone as a paying subscriber on a new platform — if you are a paying subscriber and we migrate platforms, you will be asked to affirmatively choose whether to resubscribe as a paying member on the new platform. We do not use this backup for any purpose other than facilitating a potential future platform migration, and we do not sell, rent, or share it with third parties.
2. Featured Job Applications
From time to time, Make Writing Your Job features paid job listings submitted directly by clients (“Featured Jobs”). If you apply to a Featured Job through Make Writing Your Job, here is what happens with your information:
What we collect: the application information you submit (for example, your name, email address, resume/writing samples, and any other materials the Featured Job listing asks you to provide).
How it’s used: we compile the applications we receive into a spreadsheet and forward that spreadsheet to the client who posted the Featured Job, so that the client can decide who to contact.
We do not screen, filter, rank, or recommend applicants. We pass along everyone who applies to a given Featured Job; the hiring client makes all selection decisions.
The client who posted the Featured Job receives your application information directly and is responsible for how it handles that information going forward, including any outreach to you. We encourage you to review that client’s own privacy practices if you have concerns about how they will use your information.
We are in the process of transitioning Featured Jobs off of Make Writing Your Job and onto CozyJobs (cozyjobs.com), a dedicated job-search platform operated by an affiliated company. Until that transition is complete, Featured Jobs will continue to operate as described above.
3. Retention
We retain Featured Job application spreadsheets only as long as reasonably necessary to support the hiring client’s selection process for that listing, and we retain subscriber list backups for as long as we maintain Make Writing Your Job or until we no longer need them for the migration purpose described in Section 1.
4. Your Choices
You can unsubscribe from Make Writing Your Job at any time through Substack’s standard unsubscribe tools. If you apply to a Featured Job and no longer want your application considered, contact us using the information below and we will do our best to notify the relevant client, though we cannot control or delete information the client has already received and retained independently.
5. Changes to This Notice
We may update this notice from time to time, particularly as we complete the transition of Featured Jobs to CozyJobs. We will update the Effective Date above when we do.
