My secrets for landing more (and higher-paying!) freelance writing work.

Writing jobs on this past week’s job board:
A freelance content writing job paying $5,000-$6,000/month with the potential to grow into a $5,000-$10,000/month role. They specifically mention this job would be great for fiction writers, copywriters, content writers, and others who are looking for steady freelance work in 2025.
A freelance recipe creator job is paying $1,000 per piece.
A freelance copywriter job that pays $83/hour.

“I’m overqualified for this job. Why haven’t I heard back?”
This is something I hear from a lot of writers who are pitching for freelance work, memoir ghostwriting, book editing — or all of the above.
It’s a valid question, but it’s also important to remember clients aren’t just hiring you based on your resume.
I’ve beaten really flashy, traditionally published authors for huge memoir ghostwriting jobs — even before I had published a book! — simply because I had the right sample with the right tone. Or, I said something on the discovery call that endeared me to the client and helped me win their trust.
Hiring isn’t cut and dry: clients hire you for a variety of reasons. Even if you’re overqualified, you may miss out on a job just because the client wants to go a different direction. Or, they may decide to not move forward with the project at all.
However, there are a few things you can do to see an increase in the number of times a client says “yes, let’s work together!”
🗞️ Writing News: The Most Borrowed Library Books in 2024
Book Riot compiled a great list of the most borrowed library books in 2024.
Some of my favorites are on here, including Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas and Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros.
📚 Author Corner: The Ash Trials Updates
In the past 2 months, I’ve written over 100,000 for my upcoming romantasy novel The Ash Trials and done multiple rewrite passes.
It looks like I’ll be wrapping up the full draft in the next few days — and then it’s time to dive into more rewrites!
While writing, I’ve found that it’s so important to chase “fun” on the page. If you’re having fun writing something as the author, your reader will feel it! If you’re not having fun, something’s not working. You may need to take a break from writing, or power through to get to a scene you’re more excited about, or you may need to refill your inspiration well.
That’s why I’m constantly reading books in my genre that have me laughing and kicking my feet. I like to chase the high of being delighted as a reader so I can replicate that in my own work.
Can’t wait for you to read The Ash Trials this Valentine’s Day 2025 💕

✨ Wellness for Writers: Rest Hard to Work Hard
I’m always surprised when a day of deep rest leads to an insanely productive day of deep work.
Recently, I spent nearly 5 days in a row taking hours-long afternoon naps, spending lots of time baking focaccia bread, and re-watching the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy with family.
Emails? Most went unanswered. Work? Postponed.
As soon as I was ready to hit my keyboard and do some more writing, I wrote nearly 9,000 words in one day.
So let this be your reminder: you need to rest hard to be able to work hard.
